OuterSignal vs Mercana: Comparing Customer Intelligence Platforms

DanielCo-founder and CEO, Mercana··Updated April 11, 2026

OuterSignal and Mercana both help DTC ecommerce brands figure out who their customers actually are. Where they split is data resolution: how much you actually know about each customer after the tool runs, and how that data was assembled in the first place.

I'm the founder of Mercana, so take this comparison with that context. You can judge based on your needs.

Overview

OuterSignal was started by former ecommerce operators who were early to identify the "who are my customers really?" problem. They seeded the platform with a licensed celebrity and high-net-worth database and built a SaaS product on top of it. That works well for flagging well-known names and income brackets.

Mercana took the opposite approach. Instead of starting from a purchased dataset, we built our enrichment algorithm from the ground up - a live engine that queries the public web per customer and stitches together 200+ data points across work, social, financial, and web dimensions. Every data point is traceable, and we show you the source directly in the platform. On top of enrichment, Mercana layers 20+ VIP detection categories, custom signals, personas, and built-in activation.

The short version: OuterSignal tells you who has money and a follower count. Mercana tells you who each customer actually is, what they do, what they post, who pays attention to them, and why they matter to your brand.

Data enrichment

This is where the gap between the two platforms becomes clearest, and it comes down to how each one was built.

OuterSignal's approach is database-first: match your customers against a licensed celebrity and high-net-worth dataset. Their platform relies heavily on whether a customer exists in that pre-compiled dataset. If a customer isn't in it, the data you get back is significantly limited. That works well for flagging well-known names, but most of your customer base isn't famous. The fragrance TikToker with 40K followers, the beauty editor at a niche magazine, the buyer for a regional retailer, the founder of a company you'd want on wholesale: those people don't live in a celebrity dataset.

Mercana starts from the other direction. For every customer, the enrichment engine fans out across 50+ compliant public sources, resolves identity with confidence scoring, and stitches together a profile from whatever's actually out there. The result is 200+ data points per customer, organized into roughly five layers:

Social graph

  • Matched profiles across Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, and Facebook
  • Follower counts, bios, profile photos
  • Actual posts, content themes, and engagement metrics - not just whether a handle exists, but which customers are actually getting views

Work graph

  • Employer, job title, industry classification (NAICS)
  • Occupation history and career progression
  • Company detection for B2B / wholesale / corporate-gifting opportunities

Financial and contextual

  • Household income estimates
  • Real estate footprint and home value
  • Professional affiliations and board memberships

Web context

  • Wikipedia articles and press mentions
  • Podcast appearances, interviews, news coverage
  • Every reference linked to its source

Demographic

  • Age, gender, location
  • Interests, hobbies, education

Source transparency matters more than people realize. Every data point in Mercana is clickable, so you can see the exact source and verify it yourself. Confidence scores tell you how certain the match is. If the system isn't confident, it doesn't show the data. Wrong enrichment is worse than no enrichment.

Mercana reports 90+% accuracy across millions of enriched profiles. We've also run head-to-head accuracy bake-offs against OuterSignal and other enrichment tools at numerous DTC brands and won them.

A database-first approach is a legitimate way to solve this problem. The question is whether a pre-compiled dataset gives you enough resolution on the customers who actually matter to your brand.

VIP detection and activation

This is where the two platforms diverge the most.

Detection

Mercana already has 20+ VIP categories out of the box:

  • Influencers (any platform, any size)
  • Professional athletes (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.)
  • Executives and founders
  • Journalists and media
  • Retail buyers (Nordstrom, Anthropologie, etc.)
  • High-net-worth individuals
  • Wikipedia-notable figures
  • Industry experts
  • Podcasters
  • Celebrities (actors, musicians)
  • Political figures
  • And more

Each VIP gets categorized, scored, and flagged with real-time Slack alerts when they place an order. (For a deep dive on how this works, see our VIP detection guide.)

Custom signals let you define your own VIP criteria in natural language: "fragrance TikTokers," "employees at Lululemon corporate," "hotel amenity buyers," "doctors who've ordered 3+ times." Mercana's AI evaluates your entire customer base against whatever criteria you set. OuterSignal gives you a fixed taxonomy. Mercana lets you define who matters to your brand.

OuterSignal's detection is bounded by the dataset it licenses, which flags customers by income bracket or follower count. For a DTC brand whose real buyers are often young, not yet famous, and hiding in categories like "beauty editor," "corporate gifter," or "niche creator," that's a narrow lens.

Activation

Mercana has built-in activation tools. You can send personalized emails, Instagram DMs (from your business account), and LinkedIn messages directly from the platform. A built-in Kanban board tracks each VIP from discovery through outreach to conversion. Automated workflows trigger when VIP status changes or specific conditions are met. And AI-recommended templates suggest personalized outreach based on each customer's profile.

OuterSignal has no activation tools. Whatever data it does surface, you'd export to a CRM, email tool, or spreadsheet and manage outreach externally. That adds friction between discovery and action, assuming the data is accurate enough to act on in the first place.

That gap matters because VIP activation is time-sensitive. When a celebrity places an order, the window for a personal thank-you or partnership conversation is narrow. Outreach tools built into detection eliminate the lag between "we found a VIP" and "we contacted them."

Integrations and setup

Both platforms integrate with Shopify for customer data.

Mercana offers:

  • Shopify integration (read-only access)
  • Klaviyo bi-directional tag sync (enriched tags and custom properties flow automatically)
  • Slack real-time VIP alerts
  • HubSpot CRM sync
  • Custom integrations built on request (Jira, Linear, webhooks, any service)

OuterSignal offers:

  • Shopify integration
  • Data export capabilities

The Klaviyo integration is a big deal for DTC brands. Mercana syncs enriched data directly into Klaviyo properties, so you can build segments like "customers who are influencers with 50K+ followers" or "VIP executives in tech" without manual data transfers.

Pricing

Mercana pricing is transparent:

  • Starter: $79/month (1,000 enrichments/month, 2,000 backfill)
  • Growth: $299/month (5,000 enrichments/month, 5,000 backfill, custom signals, personas, automated outreach)

Who should choose which

For a broader look at alternatives beyond just these two, see 5 Best OuterSignal Alternatives for Ecommerce.

Choose OuterSignal if:

  • You want a lightweight tool focused on flagging well-known names and high-net-worth individuals without the complexity of a full intelligence platform
  • You already have established outreach processes (CRM, spreadsheets, manual workflows) and just need a data feed
  • You primarily care about identifying macro-influencers and celebrities in your customer base
  • You want a simpler enrichment layer that feeds into your existing tech stack

Choose Mercana if:

  • You want real data resolution - 200+ data points per customer, not just a celebrity flag and a follower count
  • You care about the long tail of your customer base: beauty editors, fragrance TikTokers, retail buyers, hoteliers, and corporate gifters who'd never appear in a licensed celebrity DB
  • You want every data point traceable to its public source with a clickable citation
  • You need VIP detection beyond influencers: athletes, executives, journalists, retail buyers, hoteliers
  • You want AI-powered search and custom signal detection in plain language
  • You want enrichment and activation in one platform, no exporting to spreadsheets
  • You need Klaviyo integration with automatic tag sync
  • Your team wants to go from "we found a VIP" to "we contacted them" without switching tools
